If you've never lived in an apartment complex before or have somehow managed to only pick bad complexes, it can help to know some of the signs that you've found an apartment that will be a great experience for you. Positive interactions with the leasing staff are not always a good indicator of a top-notch apartment complex as they're paid to be friendly to you at least until you sign the lease and get your keys. Instead, you need to be looking at the neighborhood, the complex's appearance, and the reviews others have given about the complex.

Good Neighborhood

You never want to live in a part of town where you feel uncomfortable. Look around neighborhoods you enjoy or areas where your friends live. Sometimes these areas can be more expensive than we'd like, so consider exploring some up and coming neighborhoods with the kind of personality you like and low crime rates. If you're new to town, trust your instincts and read up about prospective neighborhoods online or talk to co-workers about them. Locals will know whether an area is truly safe or not, so trust them.

Clean, Well-Kept Premises

You can judge a book by its cover when it comes to apartment complexes. Buildings that look even slightly run down on the outside can point to major needed renovations on the inside. Poorly kept landscaping or trash on the streets can indicate a neglectful management. Signs of eviction or a selection of poorly cared for cars can indicate less-than-desirable neighbors. You want an apartment complex that looks lovely on the outside to have any hope of the inside being a place you'd want to live.

Positive Reviews

You want to investigate the complex both online and by talking to the tenants who may become your new neighbors. Online reviews can sometimes be misleading, as competing complexes may be skewing them, but you can look for trends that emerge among reviews that appear to come from actual tenants. If pests or lousy management responses are frequent themes, consider bringing up these concerns with an actual tenant. Be sure to talk to people who actually live in the complex; drive or walk around until you find someone who is willing to tell you about their experience living there, good and bad.

No matter where you choose to have your new apartment, be sure to hire a professionalmoving company nycto get you settled in. You have enough stress to manage with making sure that you have all of the deposits, insurance, and signatures you need to ensure there aren't any problems with your new lease; you don't need to add the stress of DIY moving to that. Let the professionals do what they do best: bring the things you treasure into your new home safely and quickly.
